SFWEEKLY MUSIC NEWSLETTER These parents completely understand: Having kids spells the end of a lot of things you did when you were younger, but the Sippy Cups have done an excellent job of getting their parental cohorts back into clubs. The local band made for children but strong enough for adults has been entertaining the widest demographic in pop music since 2004. It offers live shows with confetti cannons, juggling, Nirvana and Ramones covers, and originals like “Seven Is the New 14.” Singer and keyboardist Paul Godwin says filling this void for hip parents made perfect sense. “We are musicians who also happened to be new parents in the Bay Area, and were hoping for something more exciting to do with our kids than watch Barney reruns,” he explains. “The psychedelic celebration and tongue-in-cheek energy that informs our shows and music seems to be pretty natural around here.” The Sippy Cups released their third album, The Time Machine, last year, and continue to support it with shows around the country. They appear in the afternoon on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Yoshi’s in Oakland and will be donating money to UNICEF’s efforts to aid children in Haiti. New memberGabby La La (not to be confused with Lady Gaga) will open with herKit’N’Tenders project with Thessaly “The Ukulady” Lerner. “Gabby’s solo work, and with Les Claypool, is very childlike and cartoony in a way,” Godwin says. “The sound of her sitar, ukulele, Theremin, and unique singing style was an immediate value-add for the Cups. Visually, Sippy La La is exotic and really fun — the kids can’t take their eyes off of her.” (artwork by Kirsty Mckenzie)
