Thursday, May 14, 2009 // Pen Pals
In this age of computers and chat rooms, the pen pal has become almost extinct. Is this because we are impatient? Or maybe we just want to save the rain forests? I enjoy the quick response, and the confirmation that what I sent was delivered, but I also find joy in the mystery and the waiting. When you send a package, there is still the possibility that is might get lost in the mail, and you and the intended recipient will never see it again. Then, days or weeks later, depending on where you were sending said mail, you will receive a phone call or maybe even a letter or email saying "I got it, thank you!" I have become friends with two lovely people who live in Italy, and we have become "pen pals" of sorts. This brings me great happiness. We actually met on myspace, discovered that we have many similar interests, and began our correspondence. It moved over to personal email accounts after a bit and now we are chatting on facebook. I know I am a nerd. Anyways, since connecting online, we have started sending packages back and forth, sharing cds, and drawings and candys. Today, I received a package from them containing their new CD "Sauce Invaderz" -the band is called "Pajarritos". They also included a wonderful drawing of me and Bon Bini. How sweet! I highly recommend connecting with someone via pen...it is a whole "new" experience. Gabby La La

LA LA LAND
NEW YORK- At 26, singer Gabby La La is well past the age of childhood - but just try telling her to grow up. A tiny creature with a penchant for Hello Kitty and brightly colored wigs, she speaks in a soft, little-girl voice. Onstage, she performs on the same toy piano she first learned on when she was five years old. Sipping lemonade in a booth of FAO Schwarz's ice cream parlor in a big blue pigtailed wig, Gabby (her stage name came from a three-year-old neighbor, and she doesn't use a last name) explains her impulses. "Since I was little, I was crazy like this," she says. "I was always childlike, even growing up. So now my mom is always just like, 'Super gabby came out'. I stopped trying to pretend to be grown-up." The daughter of yoga instructor and a landscape architect, Gabby still lives in her hometown of Petaluma, Calif. She bounced from instrument to instrument growing up, finally getting a degree in sitar performance from CalArts. Onstage, she is a veritable one-woman band clad in a leopard jumpsuit, playing the aforementioned toy piano, guitar, accordion, ukulele and the theremin, an instrument that is played by using electronic force fields. "I'll use my head, or whatever, to play it" Gabby explains, poking an elbow out. Her uncategorizable sound charmed Primus frontman Les Claypool at a chance meeting in a recording session and he produced her record, "Be Careful What You Wish For" on his own label, Prawn Song Records. She's also become part of his entourage, and will be performing with Claypool at the brand-new Nokia Theater on Oct. 21. Her success shocks Gabby as much as anyone else. "I'm always surprised that anyone comes to see me. Then I realize, -Oh, wait, my record came out and everything,- and people are there singing along." Her songs are sing-songy ditties about her life. "It's just like everyday things" she says, looking at her frosty glass of lemonade. "i'll probably write a song about today, and I'll make up like, -Oh, I'm drinking lemonade and there's a bendy straw-." Not surprisingly, Gabby has underage fans, too. "Lots of people I talk to after the shows, they're like, -Oh my kids love your music and they're always singing all the songs.- So I want to do daytime shows that kids can come to 'cause it's too late and too many crazy people at night in the nightclubs." In the meantime, Gabby's been living on the road with her boyfriend while she tours with the band Particle and contends with their female groupies. "It's tough being on the tour bus with a bunch of guys. I hide in my bunk and pretend that i'm like ," as she mimes curling into a fetal position. "At least bring really hot girls on the bus!" she laments. "I should screen," wagging a finger and giggling. "Nope. Nope. OK, you can come in. I like your shoes, you can come in. What size are you? OK. You have to take off your shoes before you come on the bus."

GABBY LA LA
www.gabbylala.com
As her name might suggest, Gabby La La is a true original. Her elfin voice, costumes, stuffed animal accessories and shimmering wigs are all about playfulness. The 10-year Petaluma resident plays the sitar, ukulele, accordion, theremin and toy piano and sings her original songs She studied with Ali Akbar Khan and at California Institute of the Arts. Her influences? -I really like the songs from Annie,- she says. She grew up singing Christmas carols with her family and listening to Raffi. La La started out playing in bars and nightclubs, but is now more interested in entertaining a family audience. She is played for schools, birthday parties and Aqus Cafe, as well as a benefit for mentor Me Petaluma at Heebe Jeebe. She is doing a series of parties at Early Works Toys, and you can see her at the Petaluma Farmers Merket in Walnut Park on Aug. 23. Her CD, -Be Careful What You Wish For- was produced by Les Claypool, with whom she toured as an opening act in 2004. It is available in local stores.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 // American Idol Madness
Tonight in the semi-final competition of American Idol, contestants sang two songs each and received mixed and enthusiastic criticism. The first songs were chosen by the judges, Paula, Kara and Randy, and of course Simon. The second songs were singers choice. After careful consideration, I found Kris' (Mikey3) rendition of a Kanye West song to be the most original and refreshing. Not far behind him was Adam, with his interpretation of The U2 song "One," chosen for him by Simon. Throughout this Season of American Idol, I have been voting for Adam, the one contestant who has been consistently amazing, unique and unpredictable. He is a true star and appears (on TV) to be a sweet person. I have also favored Kris with a K aka Mikey3 because of his likeness to my boyfriend Mikey, and because he sure can sing. We call him Mikey3 beause he is the third person to try to look as cool as my Mikey (Mikey1). Ryan Seacrest is Mikey2 and as you know, Kris with a K is Mikey3. I have never been into Danny Gokey, and there is nothing wrong with his singing, in fact I have to admit that he's got major chops, BUT... he has always been annoying to me. I am not sure if it's his endless selection of glasses or his smug little smile. It could be both. I am quite upset that Allison was voted off last week. I would have been very pleased to see her in the finals with Adam. That would have been some great entertainment. I will be looking for her in the future. In any case, this has been an amazing season and I can't wait to see who the next American Idol will be. Voting was tough tonight, and I hope that my efforts have not been in vain. Here's to Mikey3 and Adam duking it out next week!

Friday, May 1, 2009 // School Performance
Yesterday, Gabby La La made what she hopes to be the first of many performances in schools. She appeared before about 100 students over the course of 4, three song shows. The children appeared to be enjoying themselves and were very well behaved. Some students asked "why is your hair pink?" and La La told them "I eat a lot of strawberries!" This response was taken with a grain of salt, and whispers were heard throughout the classroom. The Performance included such unreleased hits as "Take Away Taste" and "Endangered Animals" as well as an oldie (but a goodie) "Butter and Eggs" which La La performed for the first time on Toy Piano! The kids enjoyed waving the "Butter and Eggs" flag and making chicken noises at the appropriate times. If you were walking by, you might have mistaken the school for a chicken coop! This was a rare acoustic show, reminiscent of MTV unplugged. Look for videos from Pacific Primary on www.youtube.com/gabbyhappy.

// Hand Puppet Fever
Hand Puppets have been emerging from toy chests all over the country and making themselves known. Earlier this week, a group of about six puppets jumped out of a toy box at a garage sale in Petaluma and proceeded to nag and taunt passers by. It is reported that these puppets then convinced certain people who will remain anonymous that if they did not purchase said dolls, they would meet certain death or other negative consequences. The family holding the garage sale made no comment.
